Today, we’re chatting with Blume founder Karen Danudjaja about the benefits of her brand and products, and how she found her way into the wellness space. Blume makes superfood lattes by taking nutrient-dense ingredients – such as beetroot, turmeric, and matcha – and micro-ground them in order to give you endless options of how to boost your nutrition and incorporate nutrients into your routine.

1. Tell us a bit about your business.

Blume is a superfood wellness brand. Our mission is to be your best friend in wellness with simple products that are easy to use and build rituals on. Our blends make delicious lattes that are refined sugar-free, certified organic and boosted with superfoods. We are based right here in Vancouver, BC and have a plastic neutral commitment. This means that 2X the plastic created in our supply chain is diverted from oceans through our partner, Cleanhub.

2. What three words best describe you?

Hard-working, tenacious, and introverted.

3. What is your story?

I previously worked in commercial real estate. I didn’t have a background in natural foods or marketing, but wasn’t loving the ladder I had set myself up to climb. I wanted to do something more purposeful and mission driven. I wanted to feel excited about work everyday. Blume was born out of my desire to lead a more intentional life and hopefully create a community of like minded people.

4. What does a typical day look like for you?

I get my day started pretty early to take my dog Charlie out for a stroll. I work from home, so once I’m back from my walk I usually jump straight into emails at 8AM. At this point most of my day is meetings, I would say I am usually in 5-6 meetings everyday relating to all different parts of the business. It could be sales, marketing support, innovation calls or dealing with operations. Everyday is so different from the next! We are a really small team so sometimes it's all hands on deck. In the evening I usually do a work out, make something at home and watch bad TV or read to decompress and relax before bed.

5. How do you stay organized?

I religiously make to-do lists in my Get It Done Planner. No matter how many Asana boards and digital solutions exist I always re-write down my to do list everyday on paper. I find that writing down on paper helps me prioritize and stay organized.

6. What is one of your goals this year?

This year I would love to do an Olympic distance triathlon. I have done sprint distances before and really want to push myself for the extra distance. I think this is both a personal and business goal. I want my personal physical health to live in balance and harmony with the demands of a small business.

7. What challenges have you faced while running your own business?

Balance for sure! Turning things off and making sure I take time away can be challenging. The times I have done it successfully, I am always reminded that the renewed energy also leads to better decision making and greater overall vision.

8. What are you most proud of?

My team. We are 13 women who are all pretty new to the start-up game. I can’t believe how much we learn together and from each other every day. I am really proud of how supportive our culture is and really want to maintain and foster it as we continue to grow.

9. What’s something else you’re passionate about or enjoy?

I love to hike and be outdoors. This year we will do the West Coast Trail and finish the Sunshine Coast Trail, which are two really special hikes in BC. I love being completely disconnected and just getting lost in nature.
