Meet Tess Atkins, the Co-Founder of Bears Blooms, a Vancouver-based flower subscription business transforming the way customers can shop for bouquets. From dreaming of being her own boss to creating waves in the flower subscription market, Bears Blooms now delivers locally grown flowers across BC and Alberta.

Tell us a bit about your business.

Bear’s Blooms is a Vancouver based flower subscription business delivering locally grown flowers across BC and Alberta. Think of us like a meal-kit, but for flowers!

What three words best describe you?

Goofy, problem solver, enthusiastic.

What is your story?

I started Bear’s Blooms with my brother, Parker, in January 2019 when we both found ourselves wishing we were our own bosses. We wanted to build a subscription direct-to-consumer business that solved a problem for our customers and flowers fit the bill!

Bouquets can get a bad rap for being expensive, short lived and not particularly environmentally conscious. We solve for high cost and short vase life by cutting out the middleman and shipping buds in bloom so they last consistently longer than florists and grocery store bought bouquets at a more affordable price.

Our wins for the environment include eliminating the huge amount of waste that a brick and mortar florist typically sees by buying directly to order each week, collecting and reusing our plastic free packaging, and purchasing 95% of our product from local farms.

What does a typical day look like for you?

Typically I’m up at 5am shopping remotely at our local flower auction. This is definitely the hardest part of my job as I am not a morning person. I then put on my warmest coat (our huge fridge keeps our workspace pretty chilly) and head into our warehouse in East Vancouver.

I always stop by the Powell Street JJBean on my way in and have finally reached my lifetime goal of having a local coffee shop know my name and order. And then, armed with a half sweet London Fog, I have an amazing day with our marketing, operations and customer service teams growing and maintaining Bear’s Blooms!

How do you stay organized?

I feel like I always have a million things on the go, which is why I love using the Get It Done Planner. It helps to keep me focused on the most important tasks of the day, week, and month.

What is one of your goals this year?

We have some big growth goals for 2022 and would love to expand to a few more cities by the end of the year!

What challenges have you faced while running your own business?

My job requires me to make a lot of tough decisions, which can be very challenging for me. Because of my role, I’m often the one making the final call on high-consequence decisions and that can be stressful.

What are you most proud of?

The Bear’s Blooms team. We have such a great group of people who are committed to both our customers and our business. I feel incredibly lucky and proud to have them on board.

What’s something else you’re passionate about or enjoy?

Film! I grew up working in Film and TV as an actor and dabbled in film development before starting Bear’s Blooms. You can always find me at the movie theater on Tuesday nights or catching up on the latest HBO show.
